A new wave of cloth diaper hysteria is sweeping the hyena world. Goodmamas are the latest and greatest hard to score diaper. And all with a tiny bit of controversy. Goodmamas are a front-snapping, one-size fitted diaper that are mass produced on a small scale in a U.S. woman owned factory. This diaper is hard to get and has been selling at auction for around $80. Retail on these hotcakes is about $33.
They certainly fit hyena status on being hard to get. The controversy is whether or not they should be considered hyena because they are mass produced. Most hyenacart items are handmade by one WAHM or a small cooperative of WAHP.
Whatever your feelins on this issue, this is the most have cloth diaper of the moment. They stocked a hyenacart store last Friday and the traffic crashed the servers. The Muse was not able to snag one in order to review it for you dear readers. Someday…
Sadly I didn’t cloth diaper my daughter when she was a newborn. Oh to be able to go back and change things. Anyway I am often asked what the best cloth diaper system is for a newborn. I do have some personal experience with this as my sister cloth diapered my nephew from very early on. Of course with the super awesome cloth diaper cake that I gave her at her baby shower, who could resist all that fluffy goodness?
For her the two things that worked the best were infant prefolds and Kissaluvs fitteds in size 0. Prefolds are the most inexpensive option for those that are looking to get started without spending a whole lot of money. At a cost of about $2.50 a diaper you could easily get enough diapers to last you for two days between washing. With prefolds you will probably want some kind of closure device, like a snappi or good old fashioned diaper pins. Kissaluvs newborn size, are also referred to as KL0. They come with a snap down for the umblical cord stump and fit babies anywhere from 5-15 pounds.
Both of these options need to be worn with a cover to prevent leaks. A wool wrap or Bummis Super Brites Wrap is a great choice. Wool can be used for days or weeks even between washes as long as it is not soiled. A PUL cover such as a Bummis can be used all day, if you use two and rotate them.
I may be biased but my nephew’s fluffy bum was so adorable!
Talk about Cloth Diapers seem to be everywhere these days. Time Magazine just published an article talking about cloth diapers and how they are easier to use than the ones that your grandmother used.
While approximately half of cloth users still rely on fold-and-pin diapers provided by laundry services, new designs with cutesy names like Fuzzi Bunz, bumGenius, Kissaluvs and Happy Heinys that are made to be washed at home have developed cult followings. Velcro, buttons and snaps have replaced pins, and the diapers are fitted with elastic around the openings to hold tight around flailing legs. In place of old-fashioned rubber panties, the new cloths use water-resistant covers made of merino wool, nylon or polyurethane laminate.
I love to see articles in the mainstream news about cloth diapers. There are so many misconceptions out there and some people don’t even realize it is an option anymore. Hopefully more people start to use cloth diapers for the good of our environment.
My daughter didn’t get any for Christmas this year as we hope she is on the cusp of potty learning. I do wonder if anyone uses this gift giving season of Christmas as an excuse for giving their dear child cloth diapers as a gift. Did you splurge on some super fancy hyena fitted like a Fussybutt or a PeeWell? Or maybe a rainbow of Fuzzi Bunzs? I would love to hear from you. What did your child think?
Another common term you might see on Hyenacart is FFS. Just what does that mean? It stands for Free For Shipping. A vendor on HC may offer an item FFS in their store in order to reward loyal customers or bring traffic into their store. It may be a straight ‘Buy It Now’ listing or a lottery. Always check and see what the shipping is going to be before you enter to make sure that you can afford the shipping and that it is a price that you are willing to pay. FFS can be a great way to get an item for very low cost!

On the Hyenacart forums and other cloth diapering forums it is common to hear people use the the two terms stalking and stocking. Sometimes they are used interchangebly and sometimes there is some confusion about what they mean. I hope to clarify that a bit.
Stocking is when a store owner or WAHM on Hyenacart places items up for sale. Normally stores stock items on a schedule that can be found in the Hyenacart calendar. Items have a set time to stock and that can be found in the listing. Highly desirable and hard to get items usually sell out very quickly.
Which leads us to Stalking. Stalking is the attempt to snag an item for sale. Some vendors on Hyenacart allow you to let other people help you get an item. You may see a post with people asking others to help them Stalk an item. Some people don’t like this process as they consider it unfair to others trying by themselves to get an item. Vendors may not like that because it can add work on their end of sorting out who is paying and where they are mailing the sold item. You may want to check the policies page to see if stalking is allowed by the WAHM.
Hopefully this clears up the two terms, stalking vs. stocking. And makes shopping for those hard to get Hyenacart cloth diapers and other items much easier!
My daughter was 10-months-old when I finally started using cloth diapers on her. I placed an order with www.greenmountaindiapers.com for one of their starter sets to see what I liked. It came with some prefolds, a few fitteds, some covers, an AIO (all-in-one), and a pocket diaper. Going from disposable diapers that are pretty trim to the bulk of prefolds plus a cover was not for me. Plus trying to figure out using a snappi or pins on a squirming baby was not my thing. I ended up investing in a few more pockets, enough to make it through two days.
Well I was kind of nervous about the whole cloth diaper thing and going out into public. I didn’t know their limits yet and I was so afraid of leaks. My sister lives a fair distance away (about an hour’s drive) so going to her house tends to be a full day event. So I packed up a bunch of cloth diapers and off we went. I thought my family was thinking I was a bit crazy for switching to cloth but no one had said anything. Besides both my sister and I were cloth diapered as babies, so no big deal. My parents were also there for the day.
Of course her diaper leaked in the car on the way there, so that meant a change of cloths. Then another diaper leaked while we were visiting. Another change of clothes. I was getting so embarrassed and frustrated. We then went out to dinner. While sitting at the table I had my daughter on my lap and felt dampness again. I was very mad. I was thinking this whole cloth diaper thing was never going to work. I got to the restroom to change her and discovered that my Mom, bless her heart, had put the pocket on inside out. So the PUL was up against my daughter’s skin. I just started laughing. At least this leak wasn’t the fault of the cloth diaper!
Since then we have discovered the right diapers for my daughter’s size. Not all diapers fit the same so it may take some trial and error to find the ones that work for you. Plus we have discovered the right wash routine to remove or prevent any buildup of detergent. If you do make the switch it just may take some time for you to find the right system, so don’t give up if things don’t go smoothly for you either. We have been using cloth diapers for almost 2 years now and I wouldn’t change it for anything.
I just added a new feature to the site. It is now linked to all of the cloth diaper, cloth diaper cover and diaper bags sales on Ebay. It will make all of your searching very easy and will help you find some of the best deals for cloth diapers out there. I’m drooling over some of the Kate Spade Diaper Bag auctions myself. Check it out and let me know what you think!
When I first started to really research cloth diapers, my daughter was 9 months old. I was getting pretty tired of throwing diapers away and I came across gDiapers! They are a flushable diaper that comes with a reusable waterproof cover. I thought the idea was fascinating and loved that the waste did not end up in the landfill.

They have recently been in the news because Julia Roberts uses them on her son and the company recently received some investor funding in the hopes of growing the company. You can find them at some Whole Foods Market stores and online. They covers come in cute covers with a velcro closure, so they are easy to use. They have no perfume, no chlorine, and no dyes.
In the end we just stuck with cloth. I figured if we were going to be using a reusable cover that needed washing that we might as well go the cloth diaper route. I think these are a great option for someone not quite convinced on the idea of cloth or for someone that is going on vacation and doesn’t want to bring their cloth diapers along.
Earlier this year Jake Gyllenhaal appeared on the Conan O’Brien show and gushed about his new niece Ramona. He reported that his sister Maggie Gyllenhaal was using cloth diapers on her daughter. We love hearing about celebrities using cloth diapers on their babies. If it motivated even one person to look into using cloth than that is two tons of waste that won’t end up in a landfill. I wonder if she does her own cloth diaper laundry?
